Overview

The primary purpose of this project is to develop a better understanding of religious experience across various theistic cultures and religions. The God image refers to a specific type of religious experience related to how a personal emotionally or relationally experiences God. This is often contrasted with how a person cognitively understands God or what a person believes about God. Both of these concepts are understood primarily as psychological constructs and do not necessarily reflect an actual God. Stated differently, these construct do not presuppose that God exists nor do they presuppose that God does not exist and is merely a social or personal construct. The metaphysical reality of God is a separate question altogether.

Research on the God image has suggested that early parental relationships or attachment and self-esteem are two important predictors of how a person will emotionally or relationally experience God. However, some research also suggests they may be cultural differences and various other life experiences may also influence how a person experiences God. In our project, we will explore international and religious differences in the relationship between attachment, self-esteem, and the God image. Additionally, we will also consider how these constructs relate to depression, stress, and anxiety.

Our research team includes members from Pakistan, Guatemala, Turkey, Egypt, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, the Southwest United States, the Northeast United States, and Central United States. The research project will include Jewish, Muslim, and Christian samples. We are still trying to recruit professionals from different countries who may be interested in collaborating on this project. It is preferable that researchers are doctoral level, but commensurable experience is also acceptable. Individuals should have research experience, be able to assist in translating research measures, and be able to obtain relevant adult sample. For more information, contact Dr. Louis Hoffman.
