Course Overview

Catalog: An overview of the major theories, issues, data, and research methodologies of the psychology of religion. This course is highly recommended as a supplement to the integration curriculum, especially for those who plan undergraduate teaching careers.

Additional Overview Information: An important initial aspect of this course will be for each student to begin to develop their own understanding of the Psychology of Religion. This will include an examination of epistemology, the philosophy of science/psychology, and position on the appropriate way to utilize psychology to explore religion. In order to accomplish this goal, students will be exposed to a variety of approaches to the psychology of religion and will engage in critical thinking about these different perspectives. Second, this course will assist students in gaining an overview of the important contemporary and historical issues in the psychology of religion, including diversity issues. Finally, students will engage in the application of their model of the psychology of religion to a potential research topic.
